Meta Title: Hernia Treatment by Dr. Kundan Kharde | Surgeon’s Honest Approach (Pune)

Meta Description: Dr. Kundan Kharde explains why most hernia patients in Pune delay surgery, what really works, and when you should walk in. Read the surgeon’s perspective.

A Surgeon’s Note

In every clinic week, I meet at least three patients who have known about their hernia for months — sometimes years — before walking in. They came in only when the bulge started to pull, when sitting at work became uncomfortable, or when a family member finally pushed them.

If that sounds like you, this short note is for you.

What Actually Happens Inside the Body

A hernia is a small mechanical tear in the abdominal wall — like a hole in a tightly woven fabric. Anything inside the abdomen (fat, intestine) can push through it. There is no inflammation, no infection, no immune issue. It is a structural defect.

Which is why I tell patients honestly:

No medicine, yoga pose, ayurvedic oil, hernia belt, or “core exercise” can close this defect. The body cannot stitch itself back. Surgery is the only definitive cure.

This isn’t sales talk — it’s anatomy.

What I See In My Operating Room

Most hernias I repair today are done laparoscopically — three small (5-10 mm) incisions, a lightweight mesh placed behind the muscle, and patients walking the same evening.

Real numbers from my practice:

  • Surgery time: 30-45 minutes for one side
  • Hospital stay: Usually under 24 hours
  • Back to office: Most patients in 5-7 days
  • Back to gym: 3-4 weeks
  • Recurrence: Under 2% lifetime
  • Chronic pain risk: 2-4%

What I Wish Every Patient Knew Before They Came In

  1. A planned hernia surgery has a complication rate under 2%.
  2. An emergency hernia surgery (after strangulation) has a complication rate above 20%.
  3. Time is the cheapest variable in your treatment — don’t waste it.
  4. Almost every Indian health insurance policy covers hernia. Cashless is standard.
  5. The “best surgeon” isn’t the one ranking on Google — it’s the one who answers your questions about mesh, recurrence, and cost transparently.

When You Should Just Pick Up the Phone

  • A bulge in the groin, navel, or near an old surgical scar — even painless
  • A bulge that grows on coughing, lifting, or standing
  • Any dragging, pulling, or aching sensation in the lower abdomen

If the bulge is suddenly painful, hard, won’t push back in, or comes with vomiting — that’s an emergency. Go to a hospital with 24-hour surgical cover immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hernia heal without surgery?

No. A hernia is a structural defect in the abdominal wall that cannot close on its own. No medicine, exercise, yoga, ayurvedic remedy, or hernia belt can cure it. Surgery is the only definitive treatment.

How soon should I get hernia surgery once diagnosed?

If the hernia is small and reducible, it can be planned within 4–8 weeks. If pain is increasing or the bulge is hard, see a surgeon urgently. A planned surgery has under 2 percent complication rate; an emergency hernia surgery after strangulation has over 20 percent.
