Types of Anal Fistula
Understanding types of anal fistula helps you ask better questions in clinic. Hub: fistula treatment in Pune. Indicative costs vary by type and technique — see fistula surgery cost Pune.
Why classification matters
Fistulas differ by height, branches, and sphincter involvement (commonly described using Parks classification). The same symptom — discharge — can come from a straightforward low tract or a horseshoe network. Dr. Kundan Kharde uses classification to pick laser, fistulotomy, LIFT, VAAFT, or staged seton care.
Simple (lower-risk) patterns
Often a single tract with limited sphincter involvement. Many are suitable for fistulotomy or FiLaC after consent. Success rates are generally favourable when the tract is fully identified.
Complex (higher-risk) patterns
Multiple openings, high transsphincteric extension, recurrent scarring, or active Crohn’s inflammation increase planning difficulty. MRI may be arranged to avoid missing side branches that cause recurrence.
Horseshoe fistula
A circumferential component around the anus can accompany abscess pockets. Management may combine drainage, setons, and delayed definitive repair — rarely a single short laser session.
How Dr. Kharde determines type
Office examination, proctoscopy, imaging when indicated, and occasionally exam under anaesthesia for unclear anatomy.
Treatment options by pattern
Simple: FiLaC or fistulotomy. Complex: staged plan, possible open component. Compare: laser vs open fistula surgery.
