Lokmat health columns (2025–2026)

Lokmat is a Marathi daily with statewide circulation in Maharashtra. Between March 2025 and January 2026 it published six patient-education columns by Dr. Kharde on hernia, piles, anal fistula, breast lumps and stress-related digestion. The clippings are archived on the hospital site; each card gives the Marathi headline, the print date and an English summary of what the column advises.

Lokmat 20 Mar 2025 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on hernia

हर्निया : दुर्लक्ष नको, वेळीच उपचार गरजेचे

Hernia: don't ignore it — timely treatment matters

Lokmat ·

A hernia is a bulge of internal tissue through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. The column describes the common types — inguinal, umbilical, incisional and hiatus — and the warning signs: a lump that appears on standing or coughing, pain, and occasionally nausea. It explains why a hernia does not resolve with medicines, why an untreated hernia risks strangulation, and how laparoscopic repair allows smaller incisions and an earlier return to routine.

Lokmat 27 Sep 2025 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on stress and digestion

ताण आणि पोट : मनाचा परिणाम पचनावर

Stress and the gut: how the mind affects digestion

Lokmat ·

Exam nerves, interviews and work pressure often show up as stomach pain, gas or loss of appetite. The column explains the gut–brain connection: stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol disturb normal digestion, causing acidity, bloating, constipation or loose motions. It recommends yoga, pranayama, regular exercise, adequate sleep and a fibre-rich diet with less caffeine and junk food, and advises seeing a doctor for persistent complaints, blood in the stool or weight loss.

Lokmat 18 Oct 2025 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on breast lumps and early diagnosis

स्तनातील गाठ : लवकर निदान म्हणजेच सर्वोत्तम उपचार

Breast lumps: early diagnosis is the best treatment

Lokmat ·

Written for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the column reassures readers that most breast lumps are benign — cysts, fibroadenomas or hormonal changes — while listing the signs that need prompt review: a lump that persists or grows, skin dimpling, nipple retraction or discharge. It explains the "triple assessment" (clinical examination, ultrasound or mammography, and biopsy) and recommends monthly self-examination, a yearly clinical check after 30 and mammography after 40.

Lokmat 8 Nov 2025 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on why piles flare up in winter

थंडीच्या दिवसांत मूळव्याध का वाढते?

Why do piles flare up in winter?

Lokmat ·

The column explains why piles complaints rise in winter: cold reduces blood flow, people drink less water, eat heavier and spicier food and move less, so stools harden and straining increases. It notes that winter does not create piles but aggravates existing ones, especially for desk-bound workers and drivers. Practical advice includes 8–10 glasses of water a day, a fibre-rich diet, a daily 30-minute walk and not delaying a specialist consultation out of embarrassment.

Lokmat 7 Dec 2025 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on diet for piles

पाइल्समध्ये आहाराचे महत्त्व

The role of diet in piles

Lokmat ·

A practical food guide for people with piles. The column lists fibre sources — whole grains, pulses, oats, leafy and gourd vegetables, and fruits such as papaya, figs and dates — alongside 8–10 glasses of water a day. It advises small, frequent meals, an early and light dinner, and avoiding spicy, fried and refined-flour foods, cold drinks and alcohol. Diet is presented as the foundation of both treatment and prevention.

Lokmat 13 Jan 2026 — Dr. Kundan Kharde column on anal fistula (bhagandar)

भगंदर (Fistula) म्हणजे काय?

What is an anal fistula?

Lokmat ·

The column defines an anal fistula as an abnormal tunnel between the anal canal and the skin, usually left behind by an abscess that did not drain fully. Symptoms include recurring pus discharge, wetness, itching, swelling, pain on passing stool and occasional fever. It stresses that a fistula does not heal on its own — ointments give only temporary relief — and outlines the modern surgical options (laser, LIFT, VAAFT) that shorten recovery.

Peer-reviewed publications

Three papers co-authored during and after surgical training at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pimpri. The one-line note under each citation says what the paper is about, taken from its title; the papers themselves are the source for any findings.

  1. Publication 1 · 2013

Kharde K, Dogra BB, Panchabhai S, Rana KVS, Sridharan S, Kalyan S. A comparative study of onlay and retrorectus mesh placement in incisional hernia repair. Medical Journal of Dr. D.Y. Patil University. 2013;6(3):258-262. DOI: 10.4103/0975-2870.114650

Compares two positions for the mesh in incisional hernia repair — on top of the muscle layer (onlay) versus behind the rectus muscle (retrorectus).

  2. Publication 2 · 2014

Vagholkar K, Kharde K. Gossypiboma: A Diagnostic Challenge but A Surgeon's Nightmare. Indian Journal of Applied Research. 2014;4:472-473.

Discusses gossypiboma — a surgical sponge or swab left inside the body after an operation — and why it is difficult to diagnose.

  3. Publication 3 · 2013

Rana KV, Panchabhai SV, Srihari S, Kharde K. Spontaneous mesenteric hemorrhage. Med J DY Patil Univ. 2013;6:95-97.

Describes spontaneous mesenteric haemorrhage — bleeding within the mesentery, the tissue that anchors the intestine, without an obvious injury.
