Which register?

In India, doctors practising modern (allopathic) medicine — MBBS, MS, MD — are registered with a State Medical Council such as the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) or the National Medical Commission. Practitioners of Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha (BAMS, MS-Ayurveda/Shalya Tantra) are registered with the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine, and homeopathy (BHMS) with the Maharashtra Council of Homoeopathy. These are separate systems of medicine with separate councils and separate registers. 'MS' can be a degree in either system, so the register — not the initials — tells you which system your surgeon trained in.

My registration is with the Maharashtra Medical Council — the register for MBBS, MS and MD doctors — which is what the card, the QR code and the link above show.

The three questions I’d ask any surgeon

These are fair questions, and a good answer takes less than a minute. Here are mine.

  1. What is your qualification, in full?

Not just the initials — the degree, the college and the year. Mine: MBBS (2007, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy) and MS General Surgery (2013, Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pimpri, Pune), plus FMAS.

  2. Which council are you registered with, and what is your registration number?

The council tells you the system of medicine; the number lets you look it up. Mine: Maharashtra Medical Council, Reg. No. 2013113384, registered 12 November 2013, valid to 12 November 2028.

  3. Who will actually operate on me?

The person you consult should be the person who operates, and their name should be on the consent form and the operation notes. In my practice, I examine you, I operate, and I see you at follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Are you an MBBS (allopathic) surgeon?

Yes. I hold MBBS (2007, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy) and MS General Surgery (2013, Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pimpri, Pune), and I am registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council, Reg. No. 2013113384. You can confirm this on the MMC Know Your Doctor page linked on this page.

How do I verify your MMC registration myself?

Scan the QR code on this page or open the MMC Know Your Doctor link. It goes to the council's own page for my registration, which shows my name, qualification and registration number 2013113384, and states that the doctor is verified and officially registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council.

What is the difference between the MMC register and other medical registers?

The Maharashtra Medical Council registers doctors practising modern (allopathic) medicine — MBBS, MS, MD. Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha practitioners are registered with the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine, and homeopathy with the Maharashtra Council of Homoeopathy. Each system has its own council and its own register, so the register tells you which system a doctor trained in.

Questions about your own case? I consult in Wakad (Pimple Nilakh), Baner and Hinjawadi, and I operate at Sharvari Hospital.
